STUDENT veterinary nurse Vicki Blackshaw is to run in the London Marathon to raise money for Hearing Dogs.
Vicki has always loved animals and believes the Hearing Dogs charity benefits both animals and people.
"Many of the dogs they use come from rescue centres or are donated unwanted pets," she said. "These dogs are then trained to alert their owners to everyday sounds such as doorbells, alarm clocks, crying babies, smoke and fire alarms.
"Not only do they provide greater independence for owners, they also provide them with much-needed companionship. This charity benefits people and provides loving, working homes for many unwanted pets."
Vicki, of Holly Avenue, Elm, started running for charity in 2005 with a 5km Race for Life event.
"Before I knew it I was running the half marathon at Silverstone last year raising money for Hearing Dogs for deaf people. I managed to raise over £570 and then decided to go one step further and run the full marathon.
"Unfortunately I didn't get accepted in the ballot but I was lucky enough to get a charity place with Hearing Dogs, so I am now trying to raise a minimum of £1,600."
Vicki has done voluntary work for the RSPCA and CARES Animal Hospice and is now enjoying her work as a trainee nurse at the Wisbech Veterinary Clinic in Nene Parade.
With four dogs of her own, she fits in her marathon training with their training in agility, obedience and ringcraft.
